Hello everyone and happy October, which can only mean one thing…HALLOWEEN! So in light of the creepy occasion, I decided to make this DIY bald cap.
Bald caps are great for halloween as you can turn yourself into all kinds of things such as a clown, skeleton or a even a zombie. However they can sometimes come with either a thick rim or a hefty price tag, so I’ve come up with a great and easy method to get you bald in no time using everyday things around the house.
Things You Will Need
- Measuring Tape
- Permanent Marker
- Baby Powder
- Liquid Latex
Blow up your balloon to roughly the size of your own head and secure it down onto a table with some masking tape. This will keep the balloon steady whilst you are working on it.
Measure your head from ear to ear and also from your forehead to the nape of your neck. You then want to use these measurements and mark them onto the balloon using your permanent marker pen. After you have marked down these points, you want to connect the lines by kind of outlining your head and face shape. You can also leave a little gap around your ears or alternativlely you can cut the shape out after we have made it.
Take some vaseline and rub it all over the surface where you are going to apply the latex (inside the lines we just drew). This is going to prevent any pressure on the balloon and your balloon is much less likely to pop if you use vaseline as a barrier.
Start applying your liquid latex. I decided to use a rubber latex for this as it is a bit more elasticated and stretchy. You want to apply your first layer of latex up the outline we drew mimicking our head. Make sure that all the edges are nice and neat and also that you cover ever single bit.
Blow dry your first layer, but whatever you do PLEASE DO NOT put your hairdryer on a high heat as you balloon will pop and you will have to start all over again (and trust me, you do not want to do that- I got onto my 7th layer and did this and yes I had to do it all again..idiot!)
Repeat this process, but now what you want to do is take the next layer about an inch inwards. This is going to prevent your bald cap from having a very harsh rim. You want to ensure that you have a nice, smooth and gradient outline as it will make the bald cap look much more realistic and it will be much easier to bend onto your face. Repeat step 5.
Start applying another layer and go another inch inwards to continue with that gradient and gradual effect. Repeat the process again by applying the latex then drying afterwards. You now want to apply another 7-10 layers staying in line with the third layer (not the 2nd or the 1st) and bear in mind that drying time will get longer and longer with each layer applied.
After you have applied around 10 layers or so, you’re going to want to apply one last layer of latex, but this time you’re going to go back to that first outliner we drew to make the bald cap nice and smooth and a bit more stronger around the outside.
Cover your whole bald cap in powder. You can just use baby powder for this as it will prevent the latex sticking to itself and prevent any creases that may occur.
Start removing the bald cap from the balloon. You need to be very patient during this process and definitely not pop the balloon as you still need to apply powder to underneath the bald cap. The best way to remove the bald cap is by peeling of a small section and start working your way in with some powder on a brush. Keep doing this very slowly until you finally have the whole thing in your hand.
So there you have it! A simple and easy method to making your very own DIY bald cap! To see me do this in a video tutorial, remember to check it out on my YouTube channel!
Happy Halloweening folks!
